Find Books

Hollis

  • The first step is to use the HOLLIS Catalog to determine if Harvard Library owns the material. If the item is in the circulating collection and not checked out, you can go to the holding library and Get It immediately. Some libraries also offer a service called Harvard Direct. If you see a 'Request' link then this library participates in the services. You can have your book delivered to one of 18 library pickup locations.
  • If the item is located at the Harvard Depository, you can request it in HOLLIS and it will be delivered on the next business day.
  • If checked out to another patron, you may also recall the item, or request it via Borrow Direct.

Borrow Direct

If Harvard does not own the item you are looking for, or the item is checked out to another patron, the next step is to use Borrow Direct. Borrow Direct enables Harvard University students, faculty and staff with library borrowing privileges and active e-mail accounts to borrow books directly from the libraries of Brown, University of Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale. The library bears the cost of the service and there is no charge to patrons. Login to Borrow Direct.

Interlibrary Loan

If the item you are looking for is not available at Harvard or any of the Borrow Direct schools, you can request that the item be sent from another institution. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) enables Harvard University students, faculty and staff with library borrowing privileges to request materials not owned by Harvard libraries. Login to ILL.
