The AWM program is fully integrated into the Center for the History of Medicine. Beginning in 2005, AWM efforts have been led by a project archivist dedicated to collecting women’s collections, organizing lectures and events to celebrate AWM and women in medicine, collaborating to further AWM goals and objectives, opening collections, and fundraising. Past AWM Project Archivists include Giordana Mecagni, Jessica Sedgwick, and Carolyn Hayes.

Since 2015, Joan Ilacqua has served as AWM Project Archivist. Joan has been with the Center for the History of Medicine since 2014, previously serving as an oral history project coordinator. Joan has a background in public history and advocacy, and brings a wide variety of museum and archives experience to the AWM program. For inquiries about the Archives for Women in Medicine, contact Joan at 617-432-7393 or by email at
